Amex Travel Now Lets Members Book Airbnb and Earn Points

American Express has expanded its travel booking ecosystem by embedding more than one million Airbnb listings directly into the Amex Travel platform — a move that blurs the line between traditional hotel loyalty programs and the short-term rental market. Cardholders can now browse and book those properties without leaving the Amex environment, and crucially, prepaid bookings will generate Membership Rewards points.

The partnership is strategically significant for both companies. For American Express, folding Airbnb inventory into its platform strengthens the value proposition of its premium card products at a moment when travel rewards remain one of the most competitive battlegrounds in consumer credit. Cardholders who previously had to book Airbnb separately — forfeiting any points accumulation — now have a clear incentive to route that spending through Amex.

For Airbnb, the integration offers access to a high-spending, loyalty-minded customer segment that has historically skewed toward hotel chains partly because of rewards programs. Being embedded in a rewards ecosystem effectively closes one of the gaps between traditional hospitality and the platform economy.

The broader implication is a continuing convergence between credit card travel portals and alternative accommodation platforms. As points-and-miles culture deepens among affluent travelers, the ability to earn on every travel dollar — regardless of whether the destination is a boutique hotel or a beachfront apartment — becomes a meaningful differentiator. American Express appears to be betting that owning more of that spending journey will drive both card engagement and retention.
